Lanterne des Morts

The lantern of the dead has a hollow granite pillar, with a niche at the top in which a flame was hoisted to illuminate eternity, helping the souls of the departed to find their way. Most date from the 12th century and are located in cemeteries.

The lantern at Oradour sur Glane is square in shape.
