Lanterne des Morts de Saint-Amand-Magnazeix

Saint-Amand-Magnazeix?s 13th-century lantern for the dead stands in the center of the cemetery; it was moved to the outskirts of town at the same time as the cemetery. The square granite pillar is topped by a lantern with openwork on all four sides, and topped by a pyramidal roof with a 19th-century iron cross. A stone altar table stands at its base on the west side. Classified as a historic monument in 1910, this lantern was once used to cast a symbolic light at night, as a tribute to the deceased. It is part of a medieval funerary tradition typical of the Limousin region, marking both the presence of the dead and calling the living to prayer.
