La Route Richard Coeur de Lion

The Richard C?ur de Lion Route covers almost 180 km, with 23 sites open or accessible to the public. The route is signposted in both directions by a road sign bearing the Route's letterhead: a crowned lion with an arrow piercing its heart, recalling the tragic fate of Richard C?ur de Lion. The Limousin, an autonomous region that has been coveted since antiquity, boasts a rich artistic and cultural heritage, combined with a rich military and religious past, in its rolling, green landscapes. The western part of the region boasts a number of castles and fortified buildings, now spread across the Haute-Vienne and Corrèze regions, as well as along the Charente and Dordogne rivers. Most of them were built as early as the 11th century, then modified and often remodeled out of warlike necessity or fashion.
