Carole Thibaut crafts a modern fairy tale centered on a repulsive male character to lay bare the insidious mechanics of control. Once upon a time, there was a mother living alone with her two children. But soon she meets a man and falls in love. A new life begins, and just like that, Prince Charming moves in with them, into the heart of their bohemian, rock-’n’-roll home, taking over the central room of their kingdom. A providential stepfather, a lover of order and discipline, the newcomer stands out in the setting, but it doesn’t matter—they put up with him. But little by little, the man reveals his true nature: he’s an ogre, a well-hidden tyrant who imposes his rules and his law. The whole family finds itself under his thumb.
