The Battle of the Chemin des Dames–Craonne in the Aisne was one of the bloodiest battles of World War I.

On Monday, April 16, 1917, on the first day of the offensive, tens of thousands of soldiers were on the front lines at the Chemin des Dames. Unknown at the time, yet marked by the same experience of war, some of them went on to become famous by taking very different paths throughout the 20th century. The year 1917 profoundly shook the world with the Russian Revolution and the entry of the United States into the war. The year of the Chemin des Dames was also marked by the failure of the Nivelle Offensive, the emergence of tanks, and the outpouring of humanity seen in the mutinies. Through newspapers and period images, this exhibition offers a retrospective look at the events that unfolded at the Chemin des Dames and elsewhere.
