Who doesn’t have the wedding march from *A Midsummer Night’s Dream* stuck in their head? A staple of American films and TV series whenever a wedding is on the horizon, it belies a work of far greater subtlety. Inspired by Shakespeare’s famous comedy, the incidental music composed by Felix Mendelssohn is an enchanting piece whose timeless melodies reflect the playwright’s imagination. In the play, over the course of a single night, the sprite Puck sows the seeds of romantic confusion using an enchanted flower. Improbable misunderstandings multiply, among both humans and fairies. The night allows for anything, sets desires free, and then brings about forgetfulness.
