Max Reger, a German composer from the turn of the 20th century who was highly regarded in his homeland, produced a prolific body of work that remains in the Romantic tradition. It was toward the end of his life that he %wrote his famous Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Mozart, a tribute based on the celebrated Piano Sonata No. 11, imbued with tenderness and melancholy.
Franz Schubert left his Eighth Symphony unfinished. Although he never heard his composition—which would be performed for the first time in Vienna nearly 40 years after his death— the popularity of this work has never waned, remaining one of the most universally beloved in the history of music. %C0 Unparalleled, the Unfinished is a masterpiece of pure inspiration.
