Ma république et moi - Théâtre de l’Union

Running time: 1 hour

TEXT, DIRECTION, AND PERFORMANCE BY ISSAM RACHYQ-AHRAD

Issam Rachyq-Ahrad paints a portrait of his mother, Malika, a Moroccan woman who arrived in France at age 16. His mother, who made him feel ashamed when she came to pick him up from school, but who made him dream when she danced to Dalida in a sequined dress. His mother, who made tea like no one else and worked as a cook at the hospital. By telling the story of the woman who raised him, the actor also revisits his own childhood, his love for soccer, and his discovery of the theater—and beyond that, the issues of immigration and integration that permeate our society, the questions of identity raised, and the parent-child bond.
